In an unexpected twist to the nightmare that is ransomware (a takeover and encryption of all your computer’s files only able to be recovered via a bitcoin payment or a successful backup plan), one enterprising criminal person or organization is saying they will donate your ransom to a children’s charity.
the program works much the same as others – a link clicked on in an email takes you to an infected web page that ends up blocking you from accessing your files until you’ve paid a ransom. The infection can also spread from one computer to the rest of your network, so one errant click by one employee could impact your entire company.
But in an effort to apparently (a) perhaps make you resort more quickly to paying up or (b) make themselves and/or you feel better about the scam, this is a part of what they send:
Your money will be spent for the children charity. So that is mean that You will get a participation in this process too. Many children will receive presents and medical help!
And We trust that you are kind and honest person! Thank You very much! We wish You all the best! Your name will be in the main donors list and will stay in the charity history! (From a post on this security website)
There are better and more legitimate ways to donate to charity. Keep your security systems strong and keep your backups current so if the worst happens, you’re not held hostage.
